IN THE BEGINNING
How it all Started
1955
We are a family business, established in Queenstown in 1955 by the late Albert Victor Bouwer Stone and his wife Joey Stone. He was in the military forces in Potchefstroom, but was asked by his brothers in Queenstown, to move back to the Eastern Cape and start a funeral business then known as AVB Stone Funeral Directors.
1963
In 1963 his eldest son Anthony Victor Stone joined forces with his dad and carried the business forward to one characterised by compassion and dignity and the name was changed to Stone & Son Funeral Directors.
1979
Donald (known as Donnie), the youngest, joined the business in 1979 after he completed, what was then, ‘compulsory’ military duty. When their Dad died in 1979, Donnie and Anthony became business partners of Stone & Son Funeral Directors in Queenstown.
1991
In 1991 we approached Uncle Piet Scheepers (from East London) and Conradt Richter (from King Williams Town) to start a new venture in East London. We then started the business known as Richter, Stone & Scheepers Funeral Directors, managed by Uncle Piet Scheepers.
1992
In 1992 Johan Stone (Jnr) the grandson of the late AVB Stone, started working in East London under Uncle Piet. In 1997 Conradt Richter went on his own and the name was changed to Stones Funeral Home CC as it is known today. Johan Stone (Jnr) became the manager of this office and turned it into the success that it has become.
1999
In 1999 Johan Stone Snr (also one of the late AVB Stone’s sons) came to East London in order to help his son, Johan (Jnr) in the business and with his attention to detail and knowledge of the building industry he turned it into the neat premises that it is today.
In 2005 Anthony retired from the Queenstown business. Stone & Son Funeral Directors was closed in Queenstown and the property sold. Donnie and his wife Elma moved to East London and together with Johan Jnr and his wife Elize, they became business partners in East London until Johan’s untimely death in March 2019.
2010
In 2010 Eldon Victor Stone (grandson of the late AVB Stone) and the only son of Donnie and Elma Stone, started working in the business and after Johan’s death, he became Donnie’s very capable business partner and together with Johan Snr, the tradition carries on as a very successful family business.
